SLIPSTREAM CLAY STUDIO **CONE 6 ** CUSTOM FIRING INFORMATION:
Slipstream Clay Studio will sell Georgie’s wet clay and glazes to any customer. The cost of clay does not include firing or glaze unless you are enrolled in a class or a member.
Slipstream Clay Studio will only fire the products that we sell and have approved beforehand. We do not fire or refire any work from other studios.
We bisque at Cone 04.The firing preheats for 8 hrs, fires for 14 hrs and cools for about 24 hrs. Minimum time to get bisque ware back is 3 days, but usually 1-2 WEEKS.
Our glaze firing is Cone 5 or 6 depending on the glazes. It fires in about 6 hrs, holds for 15 minutes at the top temperature to ensure melting, and cools for 24 hrs. Minimum time to get glazed ware back is 2 days, but usually 1-2 WEEKS.
Cone 6 Mid-Range Glaze Firing Guidelines
All work must be dry footed-no glaze on the bottom of the pieces. We do not stilt your work at this temperature as most stilts are only rated for low-fire temperatures. Work can fall over and damage the kiln and the work of others.
No solid work will be fired. Work should be no thicker than a thumb or about 1 inch.
Leave, unglazed, about 1/4 inch at the bottom of your piece to allow for glaze movement. Work that has been too heavily glazed will either be fired on a cookie or not fired at all. Glaze should only be about the thickness of a dime.
SCS firings are extra cautious to accommodate different skill levels and hopefully prevent work from exploding and help ensure glazes mature. A million other things can go wrong with your work: air bubbles, warping, thickness problems, unmixed glaze, glaze application, etc. Errors are how ceramicists learn and we are not responsible for the results. (If we do something wrong, we own up to it and try to make it right.)
SCS kiln is a Skutt KM822: Chamber capacity is approximately 18 in. x 18 in. opening and 22 in. high: 3.2 cubic feet, 15 bowls. (6 inches wide and 3 inches tall)
Prices: (bowls and plates require a lot of space. More work can be fired in a bisque kiln than in a glaze kiln)
