2025 RAKU FIRINGS

$15.00

$15.00 per piece. For additional pieces, add class units.

March 14 4-7

May 23 4-7

Bring up to 3 pieces of previously bisqued work to decorate with the shop glazes and participate in the firing process. 6”x6”x6” is the max size for 1 piece. If your piece is larger than this, check with Vicki to make sure it will fit the kiln and it may qualify as 2 or 3 pieces. Dress for weather, smoke and fire! Closed toe shoes, cotton clothing (no spandex or synthetics) and long sleeves. Experiments with horse hair, naked raku and saggar firing often occur simultaneously.

Potluck items are always welcome at these firings. I'll have warm drinks. We only do these events outside of Oregon’s fire season.

All students will be required to sign a safety waiver and studio practices acknowledgement when class begins.

Refund Policy: From the time you purchase a class enrollment until the day before class begins, you can drop the class and receive a 95% refund. (The website convenience we are enjoying right now costs me a percentage of every sale). If you cancel on the day of class or after the class begins, you will not receive a refund. If the instructor has to cancel an entire course at any time, students will receive a 100% refund. If the instructor has to cancel a class session and cannot make the class up in a satisfactory way, students will receive a refund for that session (prorated).

Looking for an adventure? Here it is. We’ll learn how to achieve metallic and crackle effects from the glazing process and from the actual hands-on firing process. This workshop will be cold, dirty, smoky hard work but you might just find your heart racing at the experience, too. The work is not functional when finished: not for food items or holding water.

Excerpted from Wikepedia: RAKU dates back to 16th Century Japan. Raku became popular with American potters in the late 1950s. Americans kept the general firing process, that is, heating the pottery quickly to high temperatures and cooling it quickly, but continued to form their own unique style of Raku.

Raku's unpredictable results and intense color attracts modern potters. These patterns and color result from the harsh cooling process and the amount of oxygen that is allowed to reach the pottery. Depending on what effect the artist wants, the pottery is either instantly cooled in water, cooled slowly in the open air, or placed in a barrel filled with combustible material, such as newspaper, covered, and allowed to smoke.Water immediately cools the pottery, stopping the chemical reactions of the glaze and fixing the colors. The combustible material results in smoke, which stains the unglazed portions of the pottery black. The amount of oxygen that is allowed during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting color of the glaze and the amount of crackle.
